Abstinence Education and Its Consequences

Some low-lifes have taken a couple of punches at Sarah Palin's position on abstinence based sex-ed because of what happened to her daughter, Bristol.

Well let me show you what choice we're really making.

So much for HOPE overcoming all things.

I'll take a woman living up to her principles, even when it isn't expedient, to a bloviating pro-abort ANYDAY!

Thanks for that post. I had forgotten BHO said that. I copied the pic into my blog and linked to your post.

One of the things Sarah Palin can say on the stump is "I didn't want to punish my daughter and her child with an abortion."

Thanks for the photo - it's my new desktop background.

I'm sorry, but this doesn't seem to have much to do with abstinence education. The options aren't abstinence education or abortion. That's...just not even close to true. The options are abstinence education or responsible sex education. I don't even care if that sex education talks in gory detail about abortion and makes an ethical case against it - that would be fine, if it could just be separated from morons pretending that teenagers benefit from not having access to birth control and accurate information. Abstinence-only education is putting our fingers in our ears and saying "La la la I'm not listening" when presented with the (seemingly) unavoidable fact of teen sexuality.

Also, as far as I know, making abortions as rare as possible is actually a definite part of the Democratic plank. At least, that's what the Democrats are saying. I could be wrong - not being a Dem, I only care a tiny bit.

Doug,

Policy decisions aside, it is an astoudingly clear demonstration of the a priori values that will control the decisions.

One views life as a precious gift, bearing the image of its Creator, and endowed with an inalienable right to life. That right cannot be abrogated simply out of expediency. It exists whether the baby is a girl or a boy, healthy or sick. Mentally functioning, or just barely at Republican cognitive levels.

The other views that life as an impediment to worldly progress, "getting ahead" and such. If it will cost a little extra time, or some inconvenience, or forestall a political career - well, those things are just more important than the life of the baby... or the Jew... or the Black ...or the little brown people half-way 'round the world.

The contrast on this one couldn't be more clear.

Do you know Chris if the teen pregnancy rate has risen since sex-education and the advocating of accessible birth control has hit our public schools? I believe it has but I don't have statistics to back that up. It may be my assumed impression but the more public schools get into sex ed. the more teens engage in sex. What do you think?

In all, teen pregnancy has been on the decline for 20+ years. It has risen recently, but I'm not sure it's a direct result of the sex-ed choices (or at least not most of it).

Rather, it's the result of parental defection (which lead to a complex of factors). Our culture now thinks it's okay to dump the moral, social, and intellectual formation of our children on the public school. And we are reaping the whirlwind because of it.

Barack's quote was a response to HIV /AIDS education, posed to him as would he want his daughter (age 14 at the time of the question) to be exposed to contraception. Nothing was mentioned about abortion. In fact the affirmation that his daughter would indeed have the baby demonstrates his determination that she would NOT have an abortion; and that quote 14 year old is a punishment for ignorance of avoiding HIV. Unless you believe that 14 year olds should be encouraged to have babies?

It's really a shame when a 'man of the cloth' behaves so disingenuously.

Dear Anonymous,

Well, it's good to see that the cavilcade has arrived.

The context of the comment doesn't change its meaning: unplanned babies (roughly half of the conceptions out there) are curses, not blessings. That's why Obama has never met a piece of pro-abortion legislation that he didn't like.

I hate to be the one to break it to you, but the Republicans have done more to actually fight HIV/AIDS and unplanned pregnancy than the Democrats.
