Modernist Sermonizing

I came across this little gem on the Prayer Book Society's website. It so comported with EVERY SINGLE SERMON I heard while in seminary cemetary that I had to post it.
The sirens of modernity sound so sweet to the Episcopal Church because it has lost a full sense of the transcendence God and has majored on the immanence of God, so that its theology leans either towards pantheism (the mind or essence of the world is God) or possibly to panentheism (the world is included within the being of God). Thus the standard type of sermon is as follows:
  • God is love;
  • God's love is inclusive;
  • God acts in justice to ensure that everyone (all types) is included;
  • we should work with God as co-actors and co-creators in this great drama in making the world what She/He desires it to be.
This sort of theological reductionism is fait accompli in the mainline sidelined churches. It stands to be seen whether evangelicalism will fall to the same fate through the emergent movement.

I am of the opinion that Modern Evangelicalism (of the NAE variety, National Association of Evangelicals for the lexicon) is already at that stage in most of its preaching and teaching.

NAE IS following close on the heals of the mainlines in that regard. This has happened through a variety of factors - but it really mirrored the "slide turned free-fall" of the mainlines.

Exactly right! That is what I was taught at seminary too.

That insipied drivel had a hold on me for about three years too...

Poor hearers!

Only if every PC (USA) seminary had an RPTS counterpart...

I had the providential blessing of being across the street from an exceptionally high quality seminary - SBTS!

Funny you mention that, the President of PTS mentioned a Tornado that once hit Louisville and tore up the SBTS campus but skipped the LPTS campus. He did this in the context of saying the Pharisees will get what is coming to them.

If you've got faith, you can always rebuild.

If all you have are buildings, it's hard to keep faith.

As is becoming readily apparent....

benjamin - I sincerely hope you were joking about the SBTS comment.

If not, the president of PTS needs to resign immediately - or at least all Presbyterian support for PTS should cease. This is in no universe acceptable conduct.

[sarcasm on]Well of course it is ok Will. I mean it is a good thing when evangelicals suffer. Did you not know that? [sarcasm off]
